Abandoning inauthentic intersectionality

Abstract In the time since term “intersectionality” was first introduced by Kimberlé Crenshaw, has gained a measure of widespread, even viral popularity. Increasingly, psycholinguists are citing this concept to promote work which more fully engages with consequences human diversity for language processing. This piece discusses ways in thus far been engaged field psycholinguistics. I argue that common usage is notably out step tradition Black feminist scholarship from it derives. Originally defined as an analytical framework examining effect interlocking oppressions erasing distinctive experiences multiply marginalized people, intersectionality should not be invoked without any serious and specific discussion oppressive systems or erasure. To achieve just equitable applied psycholinguistics authentically intersectional approaches understanding behavior, must taken primarily engaging effects structural violence. The article concludes some guidelines readers assist distinguishing “intersectional” claims perform erasure those reflect original intended anti-misogynoir applications theory.
